Well, I don’t really know what to say, except I hope everyone bought organic flowers and the cards were made of recycled paper. Haha!
Right now, I can really decide whether or not Valentine’s Day is one of those things I love or hate. Thankfully for my wallet, I’ve really only celebrated one, and it wasn’t that bad.
Actually, I remember last year I had a pretty cool Valentine’s Day. In the days preceding the fourteenth, I was pretty down. I was still upset about my girlfriend breaking up with me, I was taking lame classes, and there was clearly no one out there I was interested in and who was interested in me (if you’ve experienced that feeling, you know how shitty that feels). But in my despair, as I was morosely googling environmental organizations in Seattle, I came across the website of People for Puget Sound. It was People for Puget Sound’s annual Lobby Day, when citizen activists from all over the state gather in the capitol of Olympia to talk with their legislators about the environment. Being from the east side of the state (Spokane), I was the only person present in my voting district, so I got to talk with my legislators one on one! Pretty sweet.
I guess I sort of went to escape the couples, flowers, and subdued but inescapable jealousy, but in the end, Lobby Day certainly eclipsed my highest expectations. I hadn’t been in the capitol in years (not since I was fourteen), and the immensity of the work I was helping to do really hit me. If you haven’t ever been to your state capitol, you owe to yourself to check it out. It’s pretty amazing. The best part of Olympia is most definitely the Temple of Justice, the building that houses the Washington State Supreme Court. It was so just.
I guess in the end, I did get to spend time with my true love: environmental legislation. At least the Clean Air Act will never leave me. Unless a ridiculously anti-environmental Supreme Court finds a way to gut it. Haha! Kidding.
Happy Valentine’s Day, everyone!
